New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi has announced that Derek Jeter will be the leadoff hitter, for now. So, as fortune would have it Jeter will be the first Yankee to bat at the new Yankee Stadium on opening day April 16th.
Jeter ledoff the last week of spring training, a position in the batting order that he is quite familiar with. Jeter was the leadoff hitter for quite awhile until the Yankees acquired Johnny Damon. For the time being Damon will assume the two hole. Damon hasn't been a number two hitter for more than 50 at-bats since 2002, Jeter is a career .315 leadoff hitter.
