 The quest for the Stanley Cup, hockey's holy grail, begins tonight for the sixteen teams that qualified for the honor. The National Hockey League playoffs is a two month war. The eventual champion must win four best of seven series. This means the champion must win sixteen playoff games total, more games than any other sport.
The Stanley Cup is the oldest professional sports trophy in North America. There have been two occasions when the Stanley Cup was not awarded to any team. In 1918-1919 because of a Spanish flu epidemic and in 2004-2005 because of the NHL lockout.
